Ryan and I were in Seattle, WA when we found out the wonderful news that we were pregnant.
We had travelled out west for Ryan's brother, Brent and his wife, Chris' wedding Portland which was held on September 6th. Because Ryan had a whole week of (he has to take his vacation in 1 week blocks), we decided to make the most of it! We flew into Portland August 30th, rented a car and drove up to Vancouver, British Columbia. We spent 3 wonderful nights there - it is truly an amazing city! On our last night in Vancouver, Ryan and I went to a wonderful dinner at the Blue Water Cafe. We sat outsides, enjoyed fresh crab and other seafood and a lovely bottle of wine - Little did I know that would be the last glass of wine I would have for 9+ months!! :)
We then drove to Seattle the next day, and I was starting to get suspicious that I might be pregnant (a woman's instinct!). That evening, we went to have appetizers at a nice restaurant overlooking the Puget Sound (waterfront in Seattle). I decided to refrain from any wine - just in case!! We then walked to a drugstore in Seattle to buy a pregnancy test. We were giggling like 2 school children and felt like 2 lost fish in a big pond!
Going to bed was strange that evening as I knew I would be taking the pregnancy test the next morning. I crept out of bed the next morning (Wednesday, September 3rd) and excitedly took the test. Waiting the few minutes for the test to complete seemed to take forever - but the first one came out positive! I took another one, just to be sure - positive again. Then I took a 3rd - just to be VERY sure - positive again! I ran out to the bed with a big smile on my face to tell Ryan we were pregnant! He was obviously shocked (had just woken up!) and we were both sitting there looking at each other - there really was nothing to say - the excitement was written all over our faces! That changed our trip a little - no more glasses of wine for me!
That evening after an early dinner, we walked around Seattle wondering what to do. What do pregnant couples do? Should we go to a bookstore or go to a coffee shop? We were walking by a theatre and saw a huge crowd of people lining up to go to a performance - it turned out Shrek was in town! I convinced Ryan that we should go check it out (he is very weary of musicals - but I love them!) - so we walked over to the ticket office to see if there were any tickets left. We were waiting in line when a young gentlemen came up to us and asked us if we were interested in seeing Shrek - we said yes and that we were hoping to buy tickets! It turns out he works for some sort of marketing/promotional firm and had 2 extra tickets. He had gotten 6 complementary tickets and was only using 4 of them. Talk about luck! So we ended up going to see Shrek that evening - and it was truly amazing! Ryan and I both LOVED it! He had not realized that Broadway musicals were so good!
We drove to Portland, Oregon the next day to start the wedding festivities! What a wonderful wedding weekend it was - complete with a trip to a winery (see picture above), cocktail receptions, the rehearsal dinner and the beautiful wedding day itself! I was doing my best to avoid alcohol without looking suspicious - I volunteered to be the designated driver to the winery - I was "too tired" to go out to the bar one of the nights! Ryan and I didn't' want to raise any red flags as this weekend was for Brent and Chris. The day of the wedding, I carried around a ginger ale with a lime and tried my hardest to keep with the dancing and festivities (with no alcohol!). We truly had a glorious time and were successful in keeping the pregnancy quiet! Only Ryan's sister, Elizabeth, noticed I was drinking a little less and asked us both if I was pregnant. We both had to lie to keep the secret (sorry Elizabeth!).
We headed home to Indianapolis after an wonderful and relaxing trip out west - what a wonderful way to find out we are pregnant - it was so special! The following weekend we shared the wonderful news with both sets of parents. I had two little onsies made to share the good news with them. For my parents, I had "I love Marme and Grandpa Deane" printed on it with lots of little shamrocks around it (my mom is known as Marme by her other grand kids). For Ryan's parents I had, "I can't wait for my first Bears game with Grandma and Grandpa Nagy" printed on it with little footballs underneath. They were so cute and I can't wait to dress her up in them. Obviously the grandparents were thrilled. We also told our siblings that weekend too which was great. We waited to tell others until I was a little further a long in the pregnancy.
It is hard to believe that 8 1/2 months later we are counting down the days until we get to meet our sweet baby Nagy and hold her. Ever since my last doctor's appointment on Tuesday, I find myself going to bed and waking up wondering - "Will today be the day?"
So far I have not had any more major contractions - definitely some other signs that my body is getting ready to deliver, but nothing to rush to the hospital for. Can't wait to share good news with you all!!
